RANDOM LAKE- There was no rematch against West Bend West for the Kewaskum High baseball team in Friday’s sectional finals at Random Lake.
The other West Bend team, East, eliminated the Indians (21-8) from the WIAA Summer Baseball Tournament, using a six-run exploding in the second inning toward a 9-6 decision in one of the semifinal games.
Starter Matt Parrent, the star of the sectional final last season when the Indians advanced to state by beating West, lasted just 1 and 2/3s innings as eight Suns had hits in the second when they stretched their lead to 7-0.
East, overlooked by many because of West’s glossy record, used E.J. Sexton’s double over Jordan Petrin’s head for its first run. Sexton drove in Aaron Kasten, who opened the game with a single to left on the first pitch of the game.
East sent 11 to the plate in the second. A double by Brad Young opened the inning. He came home on Nick Mundinger’s single, then after the Indians had problems handling a couple bunts, a run was scored on a fielder’s choice and hits by Sexton (single), Tony Decent (double to the gap in center) and Brad Young (double down the third base line) boosted the Suns’ lead to 7-0.
The Indians battled back with four runs in the third, with Dan Shea’s long double driving in Nick Olla and Ben Butler. Parent followed with an RBI single that bounced over the shortstop’s head, and the fourth run was aided by an infield error.
Kewaskum fans were excited when their Indians closed the gap to two in the top of the fourth, but reliever Eric Kempf only gave up one hit, an infield single by Casey Scheel, in the final two innings, and the season came to a close.
East battled hard against West in the finals before falling 11-8.
