KEWASKUM- A hobby has now turned to a full-time career for one soon-to-be village resident. After about ten years as a recreational “scrap booker” Linda Schickert will go pro with the opening of The Scrap Nook store downtown.
Schickert reveals that scrap booking started for her as a hobby. However lately, it has turned into much more than that. “I started doing them (scrapbooks for) grandkids and now I am doing genealogy. I have been teaching people and doing that for them as well,” she reported.
Schickert says she plans to leave her job at Menomonee Falls’ Wacker Corporation in the purchasing department as a buyer. However, until a replacement can be found, she will continue to work part-time. “I decided it was time to pursue my dream and go for it,” she quipped.
The store is located at 127 Main Street, east of Kewaskum Floral. The building was previously home to a hair and nail salon, although walking into the building, you would never know it.
Schickert divulged that many renovations have been made inside. The entry has been opened, enlarging the whole front end of the building. Towards the rear of the store is a good-sized airy classroom. Groups can reserve the room at anytime for a morning, afternoon or evening session.
Her goal was to transform the space into a quaint little store. Walking inside, you wouldn’t need to know the name of the store, your eyes will tell you where you are at, The Scrap Nook.
The “nook” boasts a large variety of supplies for scrapbook aficionados and those assembling their own greeting cards or invitations. Racks inside are full of scrapbook albums, embellishments, adhesives, assorted trade publications and creative cutting tools.
Schickert stated that a few of the names she is carrying are Doodle Bug, Bazzil, Jolee and Karen Foster. But a trip to the store will reveal the thousands of other brands of handmade papers, card stock, patterned paper and category papers in a variety of colors. Items can be specially ordered for customers as well.
She explained that placing her first order with many of her suppliers was difficult because she didn’t know the needs of her customers. She is hoping to get input from them, so she can have stock that appeals to all her creative customers.
“I am looking forward to personal contact with my customers. I want The Scrap Nook to be the type of store where we take time helping our customers,” Schickert explained. Building relationships with her customers, she says, will be key to The Scrap Nook’s success.
The Scrap Nook will also offer a unique service unlike similar stores in the area whereas Schickert will offer to do page layouts, or an entire scrapbook for busy folks. Those clients can pick out the embellishments and paper they wish to use or Schickert offers to complete the entire project.
Schickert also intends on offering classes on card making, scrapbook making, how to use certain tools and basic scrapbook knowledge weekly. Other events for customers will include weekend getaways (where scrap bookers go to a hotel or bed and breakfast to scrapbook, relax and learn new techniques) and all night scraps (where you can go to the store’s classroom and scrapbook all night long. During such events participants share snacks, learn from other scrap bookers and share new ideas).
Crediting her husband Gene, their family and friends, she says, “Without the help of family and friends this would not have been possible.”
The store will officially open for business on Wednesday, June 13 at 10 a.m. Hours of operation are as follows: Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday - Sunday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The store will currently be closed Tuesday although, that is subject to change. A Grand Opening is planned for Saturday and Sunday, June 16 & 17.
